“Orphaned Land” as an Intercultural Peacemaking Phenomenon
The present political situation in the Middle East is far from peaceful, and the main cause for that is a terrible combination of regimes and parties. Leaders cannot manage to come to an agreement, so they start to use the last argument - deadly weapons. Meanwhile, the innocent inhabitants of the region continue to lose the battle for survival and harmony . They live in a culture made of death and fear, as British band Placebo sings in their “Trigger Happy Hands” song, and there does not seem to be even a hint for ceasing the fights. What should be the force to persuade people to offer hands to one another?
Who could expect the answer coming from a country that has been traditionally regarded as a miserable one? There were four young men in a small town of Jaffa, Israel, who had a passionate love for metal music, and in 1991 they decided to form a band called Orphaned Land. Having taken this name, they undoubtedly referred to the Holy Land promised to Moses by God and having been converted to the Orphaned Land because of bloody wars and violence . Their Jaffa background has played a significant role in their music –they all grew up seeing different religions peacefully coexist and thus they concluded that coexistence is not only possible, but also very simple. For the first years they were not very popular and after 1996 there was a period of silence for some years.
Suddenly they have received an e-mail from a Jordanian fan, which contained a video with him showing a tattoo with Orphaned Land logo. Recalling this episode, the lead singer Kobi Farhi comments: “That was the moment that changed my life completely” . The band members felt that their music contains some secret power, because if an Arab person has the tattoo with the symbol of an Israeli band, while the Israelis are regarded as their blood enemies, it definitely means something.
Music is above all religions and politics – this is the message that the band has spread from the very beginning till the present days.During their shows a miracle happens – for a couple of hours there are no contradictions and enemies, the fans from all the Middle East gather together on the concerts, and the Muslims sing with Kobi in Hebrew. This is the moment of literally breaking the unbreakable- the rarest thing that can happen in the region is happening right on the concert .
They are considered to be the unique band who has not only achieved international success and recognition, but managed to do what politicians continuously fail to accomplish – to bring people together. The band does not aspire to possess the absolute truth, but they are convinced that music is a tool to discover the channel of intercultural and international communication and finally bring peace on the Earth.
